Admetus
You have stirred in my memory the wound on my heart. What greater sorrow can a man have than the loss [880] of his faithful wife? Would I had never married and lived with her in this house! I envy the unmarried and childless among mortals. For they have but a single soul, and to feel its pains is a moderate burden. [885] But diseases of children and wives snatched by death from their marriage-bed are unendurable to see when one can live unwed and childless all one's days.
